Meet Betty – 2016 CAREGiver of The Year

December 15, 2016

DSCN09477Betty was surprised at our January CAREGiver Awards Celebration with the announcement that she had won Home Instead Senior Care’s 2016 CAREGiver of the Year! Family members of one of Betty’s beloved clients were also present to recognize her for her amazing accomplishments. Read below for just a few of the many reasons why Betty won this prestigious award.

“Oh you’ve been out joy-riding! Come on in now, Ms. Nancy!” Betty embraced her beloved but rapidly declining client and ushered her into the home. Knowing the end was near for their mom, Ms. Spaniol’s children had speeded home from the hospital where they could trust that Betty was waiting to welcome each of them. As they followed their mom and longtime CAREGiver inside, they could all breathe a sigh of relief that Betty was there to ease the family’s pain. One thing they can all agree on: Betty’s superhero cape was blowing in the wind behind her that special night.

In Ms. Spaniol’s precious final hours, Betty read to her from the Bible, sang her hymns, and provided strong and steady comfort as she passed on from this world. Betty made sure that her client experienced what so many of us hope to have at the end of our lives, which is peace, compassion, and to be surrounded by those who love us most. Betty understood that she was chosen to be there that night to give the entire Spaniol family the priceless gift of shepherding their mom through her passing.

The family is still in awe and beyond grateful for Betty more than six months later – even stating that they are each going through CAREGiver withdrawal! What a testament that is not only to Betty’s character but to her ability to turn caregiving into an art form.

2016 CG of the Year_Betty HollieWhile this is a moving testimony to Betty’s work, it isn’t the only example by a long shot. Over her four years with our company she has truly proven herself to be a selfless and patient CAREGiver time and time again. She is masterful at finding the good at everyone’s core despite how challenging their behavior might be. When Betty was matched with a client who was famous for being extremely particular and turning away even the most well-meaning CAREGivers, she wasn’t deterred. She focused in on the things she and the client had in common and thanked us for having such wonderful clients! She encourages her clients to do as much as they can and they know she is right there to support them every step of the way. For those clients who can no longer do for themselves, she understands the benefits of sitting in comfortable silence or reaching out to hold a hand. Betty is routinely praised by clients and their families alike; they marvel at her compassion and call her a “breath of fresh air!”

In our special line of work, we know that no one can truly prepare for the decline or death of a loved one, no matter how much time they’ve had with them and how full their life may have been. But at Home Instead Senior Care, our purpose is to help our clients and their families make the most of that time and ease their burdens along the way. Our greatest joy is to have CAREGivers on our team who embrace that mission to the fullest. That’s the beauty of our amazing CAREGiver of the Year Betty – her gracious and gentle handling of a family’s most intimate and vulnerable moments is unparalleled. She genuinely embodies the heart and spirit of caregiving in its finest and truest form.
